English

At Henlow Academy, we provide our pupils with a broad and balanced education in both English Language and Literature at Key Stage 3 and 4. We are committed to ensuring all of our pupils fulfil their potential and seek to encourage a lifelong love of English; both in writing and reading.
The curriculum at KS3 is aimed at termly theme based topics that allow for students to access modern and classical reads, including poetry, novels, short stories, and non-fiction materials such as letters, diaries and newspapers, with various opportunities to write and speak.
KS4 lessons are aimed at meeting the demands of AQA GCSE English Language and AQA GCSE English Literature so that all students can leave with their highest grade possible. Functional Skills is also offered for students who cannot access GCSE English.
We actively promote Literacy every day, so that Henlow students have the skills they need to communicate with others and have good lives within the world they live in. We do this with the teaching of Grammar, the development of Oracy in class debate, through encouraging Reading for Life and Reading for Pleasure in lessons, reading at the start of lessons and in form time, in library lessons and the promotion of books in the Reading Cloud.
